The Swing

The Swing is a meditation on freedom.

A Native American woman, dressed in a ribbon skirt, moves forward on a swing, suspended between where she has been and what lies ahead. Ribbon skirts are traditional and sacred pieces of Indigenous regalia, carrying story, identity, and strength.

I created this painting as a visual anchor: a reminder not to remain fixed on the horrors of the past, but to focus on what is possible ahead. In motion, she is free—present, carefree, and hopeful, like a child reaching toward the future.
